Tibetan medical thangka depicting the three types of diagnosis: observation, palpation, and inquiry

Tibetan medical thangka depicting the three types of diagnosis: observation, palpation, and inquiry

A physician who fails to enter the body of a patient with the lamp of knowledge and understanding can never treat diseases. He should first study all the factors—including environment—which influence a patient’s disease, and then prescribe treatment. It is more important to prevent the occurrence of disease than to seek a cure.

Ayurvedic Consultation

An Ayurvedic consultation is a unique opportunity to have your health examined from the in-depth perspective of an ancient medical system. Ayurveda possesses not only a highly sophisticated approach to diagnostics, but also a profound understanding of the human body at its physical and energetic levels.

An initial consultation consists of a comprehensive examination of the patient in the three diagnostic modes of observation, palpation, and inquiry:

First, the Ayurvedic physician naturally observes the patient. In observing the patient, the Ayurvedic physician determines the constitution and current health of the patient. Observation includes the intake of vital signs (including height, weight, blood pressure, pulse rate) and tongue diagnosis. Palpation consists primarily of pulse diagnosis to determine the precise nature of imbalance(s).
The remainder of the consultation consists of inquiry, during which the Ayurvedic physician asks the patient questions about medical history, current symptoms/imbalances, past and current dietary practice, daily lifestyle, and emotional health.

Based on the information gathered, the Ayurvedic physician will make specific and personalized recommendations relative to diet, lifestyle practices, Tibetan herbal formulas, and external therapies (such as massage, energy work, etc.).
